Lip Fillers: How to get a more natural, plumper lip

I have women of all ages are asking for lip fillers and interestingly, depending of your age, the result you are looking to achieve is different! Younger women in their 20s and even 30s are usually looking for more fullness to their lips – an enhancement to the shape they already have.  Women in their 40s, 50s and 60s are more often concerned about thinning, lack of volume and the annoying vertical lines around their mouth. These troublesome vertical lines form over time and can be enhanced through smoking and drinking from straws, yes drinking from straws!

Lip fillers from Restylane® and Juvéderm® are available in several different formulas to achieve a mild or moderate fullness to the lips along with visible smoothness. Using proper technique and products matched to your goals, these fillers can enhance both lip shape and volume. For the most natural look possible, I usually like to recommend that lip fullness be appropriate with the clients’ age.

The process is quick, but honestly, it is not totally pain free. Think of when you accidently got hit in the mouth or lips… ouch! Here’s how it works. Typical lip filler injections are done after the lips are numbed with a topical anesthetic which usually 10-20 minutes. After injections are complete, clients are given a cool compress to alleviate swelling and discomfort with instructions to apply 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for the first few hours after their treatment.

Significant swelling and bruising are the most common side effects with lip augmentation dermal filler treatments. Clients are asked to return in 2 weeks for a post procedure evaluation; this will allow time for the swelling and bruising to decrease.

Lip fillers are approved for women over the age of 21 and can last anywhere from 9-12 months. For smokers, results will not last as long and can vary according to each client.
